Sustainable landscape master plans
A whole-property plan that maps soil, sun, water, and how you actually live outside. It becomes your long-term guide, so every project you take on — this year or in five — pulls in the same direction.
Portland, Oregon · Landscape & land use studio
We design gardens, grounds, and land use plans rooted in native soil, winter rain, and summer drought — places that ask less of you and give more back, season after season.
TerraSprout Landscape Design is a small studio in Southeast Portland led by principal consultant Owen Castellan. We plan and design outdoor spaces for homes, small farms, and community sites across the Portland metro area — always starting from what the land is already trying to do.
The Pacific Northwest has its own rhythm: soaking winters, bone-dry Augusts, heavy clay in one yard and gravelly loam in the next. Owen's approach is simple — read the site first, then design. That means walking the ground with you, watching where water moves, noting what already thrives, and only then drawing a plan.
The result is a landscape that needs less watering, less mowing, and less worrying. Native plants where they belong, food where you'll actually harvest it, and rain treated as a resource instead of a problem.
Six ways we help land and people get along better.

Planting palettes built from Willamette Valley natives and proven dry-summer performers, arranged for year-round structure and pollinator life. Once established, they thrive on rainfall and neglect rather than a sprinkler schedule.
Rain gardens, swales, cisterns, and permeable surfaces that slow winter water down and soak it in where it falls. Less runoff, less erosion, and a landscape that banks moisture for the dry months.
Clear-eyed guidance on how zoning, setbacks, and site constraints shape what you can build or plant. We help you understand your options early, before plans — and budgets — get committed.
Kitchen gardens, berry rows, and small orchards laid out for the maritime Northwest season — and for the way you actually cook. Beautiful enough for the front yard, productive enough to change your grocery list.
Audits and redesigns that get water to roots, not sidewalks — drip zones, smart controllers, and hydrozoning by plant need. Most yards we review are watering far more than the plants ever asked for.
Slow at the start, so it's steady for years. Every project follows the same four seasons of work.
We walk the land together — soil, slope, sun, drainage, and the spots you love or avoid. You talk, we listen, and the ground tells us the rest.
A sketch of the big moves: where water goes, where paths run, where you'll sit in July shade. We refine it with you until it feels inevitable.
The concept becomes a detailed, buildable document — plant lists, spacing, materials, and phasing you or your contractor can install with confidence.
Young landscapes need a few good decisions at the right moments. We return as seasons turn to adjust, edit, and keep the plan growing into itself.
Tell us a little about your land and what you're hoping it becomes.
